For many years Dick Smith Electronics was a premium retailer of amateur radio and electronic equipment. One of the first Dick Smith stores in Melbourne was located in Richmond and I have fond memories of catching a train and tram to drool over the brand new rigs on offer. So many radio's and so little money!!
Eventually I purchased my FT-7 from Bail Electronics, in Box Hill, for the sum of $379. Prices for the FT-7 varied from around $350 to $550, depending on the retail outlet. Given I purchased my original FT-7 in 1979 I have received very good value for money!! It is interesting to note that despite their age, the FT-7 is still a very sought after rig, mainly due to its rugged construction, low power consumption and suitability for portable work.
The FT-7 is still a reasonably sized radio to take for portable work. It is certainly not a backpack radio as some of the smaller rigs are today. However it is a solid performer, has an excellent receiver and audio reports on transmissions have always been good.
